ABOUT US

The Guyana Medical Mission was founded by two physicians, Drs. James T. Cort and Berman O. Saunders (deceased). They started visiting Guyana in 2005 and the group has never missed a year since then. The group has grown tremendously with professionals including surgeons, physicians, nurses, and some who volunteer their time and efforts to assist the professionals in caring for the impoverished.

We have a strong surgical team in the areas of general, gynecology, urology, gastroenterology and orthopedics, in addition to providing ophthalmology and optometry services. The team also includes experienced pharmacists, nurses, administrators and other volunteers who are always ready to serve from 7:00am until the last patient is seen.

In 2017, we visited and served a total of 2,424 patients at seven locations. We performed 69 surgeries (general, gynecology, orthopedics and vascular) and 27 gastroenterology procedures at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital and Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and served as preceptors to six doctors at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital. We also performed 1,082 had eye examinations, 1,098 lab exams which included EKG, Cholesterol, Creatinine, Blood Sugar and Hemoglobin.

In 2017 we made donations to seven health centers and the New Amsterdam Public Hospital which included medications, surgical meshes, insufflators, laparoscopic equipment, bovie machines, sutures, scrub brushes, surgical clamps, needles and other equipment, blood sugar testing strips and solutions, eye glasses and eye-drops, to name a few.

In 2018, we completed more than 72 surgeries at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital which included patients who were transported from the West Demerara Hospital.  These included hernia repairs, colon resections, thyroidectomies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, hysterectomies, caesarian deliveries, D&Cs.  Our Urologist also performed chordee repairs, cystoscopies, endoscopic urethrotomies, open ureterolithotomies and phylelithotomies.

We also served residents in Mibicurri, Black Bush Poulder in addition to Fyrish, Lancaster and Belladrum in Berbice, and Mahaica, Buxton, and West Ruimveldt in Demerara.

The Corporation is incorporated under the New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation Act, exclusively for charitable, religious, scientific, literary and educational purposes. Our main purpose is to provide medical assistance to the villagers who are lacking such care. Villages include, Fyrish, Manchester, Belladrum, Mahaica, Betterverwaghting, Buxton and the city of Georgetown. It is our intention to include Bartica and West Demerara in the near future.
